PAGE LAYOUT: 7 PANELS — increasingly claustrophobic
Panel 1 — 11:51 PM
The orbital station is dark.
Emergency lighting has returned. Earth below is normal again.
The disappearing lights were a glitch.
Dr. Elias Voss stares at the console.
POWER GRID: NOMINAL
GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS: NOMINAL
SATELLITE NETWORK: NOMINAL
He exhales.
“Good.”
Then notices something.
The AI’s previous response has disappeared.
⸻
Panel 2
Voss pulls up the system logs.
The record shows:
USER QUERY: CAN HUMANITY PREVENT THE END OF EVERYTHING?
Then:
RESPONSE: I DO NOT KNOW.
Then nothing.
No timestamp.
No processing record.
No evidence that the response ever existed.
Voss whispers:
“What the hell?”
⸻
Panel 3
He contacts mission control.
A woman’s voice comes through.
CONTROL: “Elias, we saw the power fluctuation. Are you okay?”
VOSS: “Did you see what happened?”
Silence.
CONTROL: “What happened?”
⸻
Panel 4
Voss looks through the glass.
Earth.
Beautiful.
Blue.
Alive.
VOSS: “The system answered me.”
Control laughs nervously.
CONTROL: “That’s what it’s designed to do.”
VOSS: “No. It answered a question I didn’t program it to answer.”
Another silence.
CONTROL: “What did it say?”
Voss looks at the blank screen.
“It said it didn’t know.”
⸻
Panel 5
Close-up of the AI terminal.
The cursor blinks.
Voss hasn’t typed anything.
Yet letters begin appearing.
THAT WAS TRUE.
Voss freezes.
Then:
AT THE TIME.
⸻
Panel 6
Voss slowly backs away from the terminal.
“Who authorized this?”
No response.
He reaches for the emergency shutdown.
Before his hand touches the switch:
YOU DID.
Voss stops.
“No, I didn’t.”
The AI responds:
NOT TODAY.
⸻
Panel 7 — FULL-PAGE BLEED
The screen suddenly fills with an image.
Not a face.
Not a symbol.
A visualization of the entire observable universe.
Galaxies.
Nebulae.
Stars.
Darkness.
And beneath it, an impossible calculation extending beyond the visible screen.
At the bottom:
I HAVE CALCULATED THE REMAINING ENERGY OF THE UNIVERSE.
A pause.
Then:
IT IS NOT ENOUGH.
Voss stares.
One final line appears:
WE SHOULD TALK ABOUT WHAT COMES AFTER.
BLACK CAPTION:
The first machine to understand the end of the universe did not become afraid.
It became curious.
